Character Analysis

Marilyn Monroe was a well-known sex icon. She appeared in Hollywood films and was adored by many (“Marilyn Monroe”). People defined her as “beautiful” and “determined.”  Aside from her beauty, Marilyn was also a kind and clever individual. Although she had a bright image, Marilyn Monroe still suffered from mental illnesses, which led to her use of prescription drugs (“Column: Marilyn Monroe”). This affected her work in pop culture. Some individuals suspected that the drugs caused her death, while some conspiracies suspected that she was murdered (“Marilyn Monroe is found dead”).

When people think of Marilyn Monroe, they think of the word beautiful. Many were drawn to her bright smile, blue eyes, and blonde hair. She starred in over thirty films and was famous for being on screen as the sexy blonde (Wong). She became one of Hollywood’s most iconic sex symbols due to her prominence and attractiveness. Her beauty was not the only thing that caught people's eyes. Marilyn was also kind with a sense of humor, as Schiller mentioned, the author of Marilyn & Me: “There were two Marilyns that I met. Marilyn in 1960 was like fresh dew on the lawn when you get up in the morning. She wasn’t the stupid dumb blond we saw in the movies. You could really see her humor and wit.” (“Marilyn Monroe: People”).

Though Marilyn Monroe portrayed a dumb blonde in Hollywood movies, she was anything from that. She was a strong woman and highly intelligent. People claim her intelligence was not spoken about enough. Monroe started in the Hollywood industry at a young age but was still educated in important ways. She had a library with hundreds of books of different genres (Marcos).

Marilyn Monroe was well-recognized for her stunning appearance, but her private life was not ideal. She struggled with many mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, insomnia, depression, and substance abuse (“Column: Marilyn Monroe”). 20th Century Fox fired her on June 8th,1962, due to “unjustifiable absences” (2). Her absences could have stemmed from her illnesses. On the night she passed, Marilyn consumed prescription drugs mixed with alcohol. Some people believed her doctors were to blame for giving a mentally ill patient access to many drugs at once (3). Marilyn’s death was confirmed as suicide, but many people continue to doubt this. Her death sparked conspiracies, with some believing that it was murder.

Even now, Marilyn Monroe is still well-known. Her fame and success are still acknowledged and admired by many. People see her as an icon, and as someone who had an impact in Hollywood. She was more than just a stunning model and actress that the public knew her for. Those who knew her were aware of her intelligence and sense of humor. Her passing influenced many people and is still talked about today. People continue to wonder what truly happened to the icon Marilyn Monroe.
